Flash FLV uses progressive download or streaming and starts playing right away. Flash SWF format takes a few seconds to download after you see the white square. Windows Media is more picky and if you have a Mac, it won't play for you unless you have Flip4Mac. All formats play in the area at the bottom of the page except Real Media which plays in the Realplayer. To see only RealMedia format videos look here
To explore, start with the QuickTime Video on the bottom of this page (use the scroll on the main browser window - Did you see any flying penguins?) or keep scrolling down this area for formats such as Flash or Windows media. Explore by category or by media format. Most of the videos over a few minutes length will probably require DSL or Cable for best viewing. Those labeled low bandwidth will be good for dial-up.
